BBC iPlayer Global App for the iPad, is it worth it?

ipad app for bbc iplayer global

The global edition of BBC iPlayer brings you a selection of  British shows, including Top Gear, Doctor Who and Little Britain. All available on demand on your iPad.

This app managed by BBC Worldwide, a commercial company that is owned by the BBC (and just the BBC). No money from the licence fee contributes to its service and distribution (so they claim)

Which countries is the BBC iPlayer iPad app available in?

The BBC iPlayer iPad app is currently available in the following countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Australia. The content will vary slightly in each country due to various rights agreements. If you visit another country you will only be able to access programmes that are available in that area.

How Much is it?
It will cost 6.99 euros per month (£6.14), with the option of an annual subscription priced at 49.99 euros (£44). The service will offer a limited amount of content for free, supported by pre-roll ads and sponsorship, but its core business model is subscription based.
What’s the difference?
This international product will look and feel similar to the UK  iPlayer app, but functions in a different way. Instead of a seven-day catch-up service, it will offer a showcase of BBC shows, old and new. Examples given include Fawlty towers, Only Fools and Horses, Sherlock and Doctor Who.
The app will have one feature not available in the UK – the ability to download content and watch off-line!
the advantages:
  • able to download content and watch off-line
  • access old content not currently available on the UK iPlayer app

the disadvantages:

  • very limited content
  • no up to date content for your favourite tv shows (Eastenders etc)
  • poor value for money
  • no live TV

Solution:
If you are a UK license payer and travelling abroad then use a VPN service to watch any UK based intenet TV like the BBC iPlayer, ITV player & 4OD whenever you want! Then you’ll have great value for money and be able to access the content you’ve already paid for!
